Results from round one of the 2024 Welsh Open Sprint Enduro Championship saw EnduroGP kingpins battle for the King of the Hill title, Brad Freeman claims maiden win ahead of Steve Holcombe and Jed Etchells.

As one of the host venues for the 2024 EnduroGP of Wales in August, Cwmythig Hill sure put on a fine display as it hosted round one of the Borilli Welsh Open Sprint Enduro Championship. Perfect conditions, a great enduro test mixing classic grass fields, MX track and extreme section, plus a bumper entry with every level from the world’s best to kids and newcomers.

The Rhayader District Motorcycle Club are also rooted in the EGP of Wales and, if this was a dry run for what we have on the cards for August, we’re in for a cracking GP.

The sell-out entry for this first round of the Welsh Open Sprint series was a reflection of that upcoming GP – riders wanting practice time on the tests – but also the fantastic venue and in truth the popularity of this series.

That entry included EnduroGP World Champion and reigning Welsh Open Sprint Champion, Steve Holcombe debuting his Honda RedMoto CRF250RX on home soil alongside Beta Factory Racing’s Brad Freeman making his debut in the series, Fantic Racing’s Jed Etchells, Jack Edmondson, Alex Walton, Danny McCanney, Dan Mundell, David Knight and we’re happy to see also Joe Wootton making his return to racing after such a long injury recovery period.

Freeman on 300 RX

Switching bikes from his usual 300 RR enduro model to the 300 RX two-stroke motocross bike, Brad set the pace through the day clocking fastest test times in all but one of the seven tests.

The fire-breathing 300 RX looked like a weapon round the long test which typically included some horsepower hills and the fast Cwmythig Hill MX track. Brad finished the day with a total time of 00:51.942 on the clock.

Second on the day and possibly wishing for a few more horses up those hills, Steve Holcombe was equally impressive clocking in 23 seconds adrift of his EGP rival and a minute clear of Jed Etchells claiming the final step on the overall podium.

Jack Edmondson and Alex Walton completed the top five in a super-competitive Championship class.

Round two of the series lands in another EnduroGP of Wales venue, Saintswell, on June 9. Entries have already sold out.
